Dresden’s grand architecture and the sandstone views of Bastei make a tempting escape from Prague. But should you go by train, bus or guided tour? Start with what you want from the day: time to explore the city in depth, or a combination of city, history and nature.
As a Prague-based tour operator, we travel this route regularly. Here is our practical guide to choosing the option that suits you.
Prague to Dresden by public transport
By train: flexibility for a day in the city
For scenery and onboard comfort, the train would be our pick over a scheduled bus. The route follows the Vltava and Elbe valleys, making the journey part of the experience. Long-distance trains generally feel more spacious, with room to stretch your legs and walk around. Onboard dining offers a wider choice of meals and drinks, while toilet facilities are typically roomier than those on a coach. Check the facilities on your chosen service; České dráhy’s ComfortJet trains offer a restaurant area and an accessible toilet with a baby-changing table.
The train is a good choice if Dresden itself is your priority. The journey takes around two hours on direct services; check the timetable for your date, including engineering works and your return train. Remember to allow time to reach the station from your accommodation in Prague.
Once you arrive, the day is yours: explore the Old Town, enjoy lunch or spend longer inside a museum. Check current departures and fares directly with České dráhy.
By bus: compare RegioJet and FlixBus
For an independent coach trip, compare RegioJet and FlixBus. Prices depend on the date, departure time and how early you book, so compare the full return fare with the train.
Check the departure and arrival stops, luggage allowance and journey time. Leave a buffer for traffic, especially before your return departure. As with the train, you arrange your own sightseeing once in Dresden.
Tickets, discounts and booking directly
Children, students and seniors may qualify for reduced fares. These vary by operator, age, route and ticket type, and international journeys can have different rules from domestic travel. Enter the correct passenger categories and check what proof of eligibility is required. See the RegioJet discount conditions and České dráhy’s child-fare information.
We recommend booking directly with the transport operator. Comparison sites can help you find options, but intermediaries may add booking or service fees. Compare the final checkout price and cancellation terms; booking direct keeps changes and support with the company running your journey.

Can you visit Dresden and Bastei in one day?
Bastei Bridge is outside Dresden, in Saxon Switzerland. Adding it to an independent day trip means extra local journeys and connections, on top of your travel from and back to Prague.
Our advice: if you travel by train or scheduled bus, focus on Dresden and enjoy the city properly. Fitting Dresden and Bastei into the same day can be possible with an early start and suitable connections, but we would not recommend it for a relaxed day trip from Prague.
If you do plan it independently, check the official Bastei visitor information and VVO route information for current connections. Bastei includes stairs and uneven paths, so choose a route suitable for your mobility.
